About me
Hi, I’m Dan Layzell – an experienced product design engineer with a background in product, point of purchase and construction design.
As a designer, I am able to take a design from an initial idea, develop a series of concepts, create prototypes (sometimes hand-made by myself), provide budgetary costings and seek out suitable suppliers. I then proceed with detail designs (DFMA), oversee production, conduct quality control checks and provide customer support for a range of new products. Most of the products I have worked on are produced either in Europe or China, requiring excellent communication both verbally and through the use of detailed engineering drawings.
I am an advanced user of the SolidWorks design software. This coupled with sketching skills, visualisation software and image manipulation / creation (with Adobe Photoshop / InDesign / Illustator) enables me to design a wide range of products utilising many materials and processes.
In addition, being able to produce production quality ‘in-house’ prototypes from various materials and with many different tools such as vacuum forming machines, FDM rapid prototyping machine (self-built reprap) , acyrlic fabrication, MIG / spot welded sheet metal / wire fabrication, makes me more of a ‘Designer-Maker’, with broad all round skills.
